We’ve recently seen an increase in plumbing issues across several properties caused by disposable wipes being flushed down toilets. We want to take a moment to clarify something important:
Even if a product is labeled “flushable,” it should not be flushed.
So why are they marketed that way?
Many of these products are technically biodegradable, but that doesn’t mean they break down quickly. Unlike toilet paper, which is specifically designed to dissolve almost immediately in water, wipes are made to stay intact much longer. They can take a significant amount of time to break down, and during that time, they can easily get caught in plumbing lines and begin to accumulate.
Over time, this buildup can lead to serious blockages, backups, and even septic system failures.
One brand we frequently come across during inspections is Dude Wipes, and while they are marketed as flushable, they should always be disposed of in the trash, not the toilet.
What can happen if wipes are flushed?
- Blocked plumbing lines
- Sewage backups into the home
- Damage to septic systems
- Costly emergency plumbing repairs
If you’ve ever used a public restroom, you’ve likely seen signs that say, “Do Not Flush Anything Other Than Toilet Paper.” The same rule applies here; your home’s plumbing system works the same way and needs the same level of care.
